These guides take a significant amount of time and effort to make, and anything that can be given is extremely appreciated. Even just a dollar from you can help, it adds up very quickly when many people contribute together.

You need to defeat The Reaper to get the “Unsurpassed Rebel” trophy, and for a lot of people this is the hardest trophy to attain in Persona 5 Royal.

Flu trick no longer works, you need to use our other methods!

They removed the “flu” trick. In the original version of Persona 5 you could purposely enter Mementos during the “flu season” which occurs several times throughout the game, and sometimes The Reaper would have the flu status, allowing you to easily beat him.

Now in Royal, they removed that trick, so we need to use other tricks instead! Most guides online were written for the original version of Persona 5 and tell you to use the flu trick, so you can’t use those guides, instead we’ll find another way to easily cheese The Reaper!!

How to spawn the reaper and Is The Reaper Missable?

First of all, if you’re unfamiliar, you need to enter anywhere in Mementos and wait around a while, 5-10 minutes usually, to spawn The Reaper. Morgana will sense a “strange presence” and you can enter the fight with The Reaper, a unique-looking boss enemy.

This means that this trophy is missable if you can’t enter Mementos. No worries, though, in Royal, you have an extra month in January, and you’re free to enter Mementos at that time.

For that reason, it’s best to wait until late game to tackle fighting The Reaper because your levels will be higher and you’ll likely have better personas. Level 60+ is usually good, but not strictly necessary. The Reaper has a level of roughly 85 and 5000 HP, and Persona 5 Royal actually scales damage based on level difference, so you’ll only be dealing tiny chunks of damage if you’re ~5 levels below his level.

If you wait until you’re in the level 70’s, you’ll be dealing “normal” damage to him, but otherwise you’ll be only damaging him in very tiny chunks. It’s okay to be in 50’s-60’s and only be dealing tiny chunks of damage!

What’s the trick to beat the reaper easily?

Just set the difficulty to Safety or Easy, and get a showtime attack in the battle!

The showtime attack is a combination for two characters attack that triggers under certain conditions. But as you progress through the game, you automatically unlock more showtime attacks between different combinations of characters. This naturally increases your chances of triggering and showtime attack, it’s a little bit random.

The showtime attack is extremely powerful and seems to bypass the enemy’s defense or the level-scaling based damage we were explaining earlier.

For us, one single showtime attack took down 70% of The Reaper’s health! Then, all you have to do is keep surviving, in general spam the elemental -dyne spells your characters have and keep spamming revive and mediarahan with Morgana.

You won’t be doing much damage from -dyne spells, but most of his health was already removed so you just need to keep trucking on, if you get a second showtime attack then you’ve already won. Casting “Debilitate” will also be handy to increase the damage you deal to The Reaper, but isn’t strictly necessary if you don’t have that spell.

Before attempting, make your main character resistant to instant-kill attacks!

Also, for your main character, fuse a persona resistant to instant kill attacks, which are curse and bless elements. You need to do this, you’ll probably get randomly killed in the battle at some point if you don’t because The Reaper does start spamming insta-kill multi-target spells when his health is low.

Mother Harlot (level 85) is the persona I used, BUT you don’t actually need to grind to level 85. Instead, get the Strength (Twins) Confidant maxed (you need to be level 51 to do that, you need to fuse Seth) and it’ll let you fuse personas above your character level for an extra cost.

If you don’t want to use such a high-level persona, you can just fuse a persona immune to one of those insta-kill elements, then equip an item that makes you immune to the other element too. For example, fuse Power (level 40 or so) and turn it into an item in the Velvet Room to get a null curse accessory, and equip it. Then fuse a persona that has null/absorb/repel bless, which there are plenty of even at lower levels.

Other characters don’t really matter if they are downed from instant death, just revive them, it only is extremely bad if your main character dies because then it’s an instant game over. I tried fighting The Reaper without immunity to insta-kill elements, and I just couldn’t get through when The Reaper reached critical health, he will start panicking and spamming insta-kill multi-target attacks on everyone.

How to increase chances of triggering showtime attacks

Remember though, you need only one of the characters in the party from the showtime attack to actually do the showtime attack. Let’s say you want to trigger Ann and Morgana’s showtime attack, you only need one of them in your actual party in the battle!

Now, how do you make sure you get showtime attacks? It’ll happen naturally in the fight with The Reaper, but to outline some of the ways:

  • If you hit a critical attack on an enemy
  • Baton pass
  • One or more characters in your party have low health (below half, usually Morgana will say a comment)
  • One or more of your characters have been downed

Summary of how to beat The Reaper without Flu in Royal to get that trophy easily!

  1. Lower difficulty to Safety or Easy
  2. Make your main character immune to curse and bless attacks, through personas or items or both
  3. Trigger a Showtime Attack to remove most of The Reaper’s health
  4. Keep slowly taking off whatever health remains, healing and reviving your characters as needed
