How to blow open the fortress door using the tank shell, and how to make a tank shell from saltpeter, sulphur and milled charcoal
Home»Game Guides»How to make tank shell in Amnesia: Rebirth Puzzle Guide
This puzzle starts when you see a giant door you cannot open after listening to the radio. She comments to herself, “I can’t open this alone,” and to solve it you need to shoot a shell from the nearby tank, but to do that you need to make a shell from three ingredients: saltpeter, sulphur, and charcoal.
First, you left the quartermaster’s area when leaving after you listened to the radio. You may already have saltpeter from this area, but if you don’t, you need to go back into the building you exited from. It’s no problem, go to the giant door you cannot open, and follow the signs to the left to go back into the building.
We were attacked by a creature when we were playing, but the creature was gone when we returned. Follow all the labelled signs to get to the quartermaster’s area and in the supplies pantry get the saltpeter as shown.

Now return outside and go to the tank, located right near the giant door. Open the upper hatches of the tank to enter the tank. Look inside the inside walls of the tank to grab a key, we need this to enter the arsenal area of the fortress.

Use this key to get in the arsenal. The arsenal is just to the right of the giant door and tank, just under some stairs. You’ll find a locked door, use the key from your inventory onto the door to open it. There’s another door in the upper area with another movable cannon, but that door does nothing, that’s not the correct door to use.
In the arsenal, you’ll immediately find a shell-making device. Keep going into the arsenal and jump over the tripwires. You’ll come to another room which has a boiler, a milling machine, and the charcoal itself.
Pick up the charcoal, and use it from your inventory into the miller, not the boiler, to get the milled charcoal. You will need to put it in and turn the handle, then open it up to collect the milled charcoal.

Keep going into the arsenal and you’ll come into a strange room with a cage, if you look through the cage you’ll see a dead soldier on a chair with a grenade in his hand. To the left of this room there are open windows, use them to get outside and look to the right while outside. You need to jump to that window on the right, it lets you get onto the other side of the cage, but you need to close the other windows to get to it as so:

Open that window, get inside, and look for a medicine cabinet. There will be a unique item medicine that contains the sulphur you need. You also need to get outside of this cage, you can touch the soldier’s grenade and run back outside, but in this game death has no penalty, so you can die and keep the item if you want to do it that way.

Go to the boiler you saw earlier where you got and milled the charcoal. Take the top off the boiler, put the medicine in, use a match to light the bottom of the burner, and put the top back on. Wait a few seconds, unlight it, take the top off, and collect the pure sulphur that remains. The image below shows the burner and the top of it, don’t lose the top.

Go back into the first room of the arsenal that has a shell-maker. Use the three items: saltpeter, milled charcoal, and sulphur powder into it, push the lever, and you will make a tank shell.

Return to the tank and go inside as before. Use the lever circled below to reload, then use the tank shell from your inventory into the chamber, then use the lever again, use the lever below it to shoot!
