Age of Reforging: The Freelands Launches into Early Access
Chinese game developer and publisher Personae Games reveals their new medieval fantasy sandbox RPG, titled “Age of Reforging: The Freelands.” The game has entered early access and is now accessible on Steam for a price of £18.89/$24.99.
Drawing inspiration from classic CRPG titles, Age of Reforging: The Freelands combines player choices, open-ended exploration, and innovative survival mechanics.
In Age of Reforging: The Freelands, players assume the role of a “reforger,” handpicked by the goddess of fate to embark on an adventure in The Freelands, a realm characterized by lawlessness and inhabited by outlaws and malevolent forces.
The game features a diverse array of races, including Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Grey Orcs. Players have the freedom to select a class that aligns with their preferred playstyle, and they can further customize their characters using over 70 adjustable appearance options.
Once players set foot in The Freelands, their journey becomes entirely their own. The game prides itself on offering absolute freedom, combining a central questline with a multitude of side missions that can be acquired in the various towns scattered across The Freelands. Quests are designed with multiple outcomes, resulting in a branching narrative that ensures each playthrough is distinct.
There are 9 recruitable characters, each possessing unique combat styles and moral compasses. These companions bring their individual stories and missions, engaging in discussions and influencing player decisions as they progress through the game. Effective allocation of attribute points and equipment will dictate the effectiveness of the player’s squad, requiring careful management based on available resources.
In a realm without laws, mastering combat proves essential. Age of Reforging: The Freelands adopts a system akin to the Baldur’s Gate series, where characters are primarily directed through mouse clicks. Players can set formations and combat preferences for each team member, and tactical triggers can be customized to adjust their behavior. While battles should be chosen thoughtfully, a range of options ensures adaptability in various combat scenarios.
Time serves as a formidable adversary in Age of Reforging: The Freelands, as survival elements are seamlessly woven into the gameplay. While traversing the expansive sandbox world, players must remain aware of their hunger and fatigue levels, which gradually increase over time. Nourishment can be procured through various means, and establishing camps at regular intervals provides essential respite for both the player and their companions. Neglecting the deteriorating physical condition of the squad will lead to dire consequences.
